How fast is sea level currently rising?

To answer this question for the global mean sea level (GMSL), we compare the sea level trend of the last 100 years with all previous 100-year periods. Since the beginning of data availability (1900), there are 23 overlapping 100-year periods.

  • So far, the largest 100-year trend was in the period of 1921-2020, whereas the smallest trend was in the period of 1900-1999.
  • The trend of the last 100 years is larger than the largest trend of the past.
